Greek Tragedy Plays Out at WVU

A series of incidents led officials at West Virginia University to suspend all fraternity and sorority activity until the end of the semester.

Eighteen-year-old Nolan Burch died after found unconscious inside a fraternity house. Officials said he was not breathing and had no pulse.

#PrayforNolan began trending on Twitter soon after the news broke.

This was not the only incident however, just the one that led the school into PR crisis mode. A week earlier, Sigma Chi was suspended following 19 arrests for underage possession of alcohol.

WVU President E. Gordon Gee offered little in the way of a formal statement relating to the suspension, but there is a blurb on the University’s Website that says he offers his condolences to Burch’s family.

Words cannot describe the heartache we, as a West Virginia University family, feel at the loss of one of our own – Nolan Michael Burch – who passed away today.

The outpouring of love and support from his friends and this community has been what you would expect from Mountaineers, and I would ask that you continue to keep the Burch family and many friends in your thoughts and prayers.

It appears that, until the investigation is complete, there will be no fraternity or sorority activity.

So how would you handle a situation like this? Is it fair that all Greek life is reprimanded for the actions of two fraternities?
